Angoves Long Row Shiraz

Winery: Angoves Wines

Region South Australia

Vintage 2008

REGION: South Australia, 2008

VITICULTURE & WINEMAKING:
The grapes for this wine were sourced from Angove vineyards and other specially selected premium growers in the region. Drought conditions continued into the 2008 season, with exceptionally low water allocations for South Australian grape growers. Extreme care
was needed to eke out the water and keep the vines healthy. High temperatures after Christmas resulted in reduced yields. Late January and February however, provided perfect weather, cool nights and warm days. The crop ripened early but evenly and most of the grapes for this Shiraz were picked in February before the heat shock of early March so the fruit for this wine was vibrant and fresh.

The grapes were picked at night to make sure that they were as cool as possible. Crushed to modern rotary fermenters the grapes were then allowed to macerate for 2 days before inoculation and fermentation. Pressed off skins 7 days later and allowed to go through the second malolactic fermentation. The wine has then had minimal handling prior to filtration for bottling on the Angove Family Estate.

Colour This wine is deep red in colour, with some purple hues.

Aroma Ripe berry and plum fruit aromas with notes of spice and pepper dominate the nose.

Palate On the palate rich ripe black berries and plums precede fine soft smooth tannins and a good length of fruit. Some vanillin and toast characters provide a well balanced finish.

This Shiraz is the perfect accompaniment to your favourite steak or pasta dish.

Reviews

Quaff 2011 - Peter Forrestal
The Best Wines in Australia Under $15 - Pretty Good

"A Riverland favourite that is soft, round and fleshy, with some firmness to finish."

Village Voice Balmain - Paul Martinez - Sept 2010

"We are always on the lookout for well-priced wines that deliver where it counts (ie: flavour and style) and we believe we’ve found it with the 2008 Angove’s Long Row Shiraz.  It’s soft and supple with just enough bite to make it interesting.  Four-star rating and an 88 out of 100 from James Haliday.  Five-star and a 90 out of 100 from the Little Red Wine Book.  Great, honest, everyday drinking.”

James Halliday Australian Wine Companion - 2011 Edition - 4 Stars 88 Points

“Bright colour; ripe red and blue fruit bouquet, complemented by attractive spice notes; the palate is vibrant and fresh, showing a slight tarry note to the finish.”

Fine Wine Club - Barry Weinman - July 2010 - 17 Points

“Quite dense and closed.  Super winemaking to this with a silky mouth-feel that borders on seamless.  Builds intensity on the finish and there is real length.  Stunning value.”

Western Suburbs Weekly - John Jens - 06.07.10 - 18 Points

“The fruit is light, dry, spicy, dense and long.  The length of the succulent and appealing fruit-driven flavours becomes more apparent with the second and third tastes.  The tannins are fine and the fruit is delicious.”

The Big Red Wine Book - Campbell Mattinson and Gary Walsh - 2010/11 Edition
5 Stars - 90 Points

'Angove won a couple of major awards in last year's edition of The Big Red Wine Book, and judging by this wine...the fine form continues. Really good. It sure has deliciousness down pat. It tastes of blackberries and toasty oak, wood spice and raspberries. Smooth across the tongue and fresh through the finish.'
